550s in our group burn about the same as an xc800. Probably around 10mpg. The 488 seemed to use less, but the xc500sp probably used the least, until my dad bought a venture.

the polaris 550 fan must be the worst sled on the snow for fuel mileage. it does worse than the xc800. You will probably use 30% less, and have a much better top end. I would estimate that true top speed is closer to 90 than 100, but that sled will let you keep up with anyone on most trails.

we have two basic soil types around here. Mud, and used to be mud. Our tires only go one way.

I have seen more than one sled with the gearbox wrecked from trying to shift into reverse while still rolling. Everytime you make something idiot proof, along comes a better idiot. I think the electronic referse is the best thing since oil injection.

good choice. It should be very reliable. I still have my old (1994) indy lite 340 kicking around. It has around 6000 miles, and still runs good. I take it out once in a while if we are short sleds. Top end isn't what it used to be, but in total, all repairs (other than cosmetic) has been 4 belts and...
