Official Press Release
The Historic Big One Returns to the Viking Speedway.
After a 30 year hiatus, the Winter Spectacular is returning to the Historic "High Flyin' Half Mile" Viking Speedway in Alexandria MN on January 30 - February 1, 2014.
A chronology of events.- RFN Racing LLC has formed 10GDP LLC (10 Guys Dreams and Promotions). This event that has been on our "bucket list" for a few years. There have been many hurdles to jump over with the city, fair board and the Speedway. 5 - 10 years ago we would not have had the resources, contacts and wherewithal to make this happen. We have a vision and based our show around the ER model, with a few changes that we will enhance the show for spectators and drivers.
Research/Sounding Boards- We have had numerous conversations and sought input from Dave Wahl, Dave Wanderschied, Jerry Korniek, Todd Achterberg, Larry Preston, Monty Normand, Kurt Krueger, Mike Meagher, Nate Westlund, Paul Socwell and a host of drivers. As a professional courtesy, weeks prior to this announcement we contacted Nate at Ogilvie, Ralph at Wausau, ORA and PVR regarding our date and other events. At this time, some are considering not having an event on those dates-this is appreciated.
ORA/PVR/ER- 10GDP and the Winter Spectacular is a single event (show), a dream of ours to bring the Viking Speedway to her old glory as she was in 1974 to 1985, when the Dayco Holiday Spectacular was one of the crown jewels in the snowmobile racing world. We will continue to support these groups with participation, sponsorships just as we have in the past- that will not change.
Spirit of Racing / Olive Branch- In the spirit of vintage and late model racing, we will be using core (best) classes from ORA and PVR and USSA. Yes, some classes will be cut for the betterment of the show. Yes, some classes will be combined/scored separately for the show. We will be using ORA rules for some, PVR rules for some, Eagle River rules for some, USSA rules for some.
Budgets-We have crunched the numbers and ran a financial analysis. This is a herculean task-we are not in it for the money (which if we break even) will be considered a success. Some of the major expenses we face-2.6 million gallons of water (purchased from the water utility), fuel and manpower hours to build the track, rent for the track, insurance, trophies, coats, ambulance, advertising, snow removal, etc. We have estimated that this show will be incur $65,000-$ 75,000 in expenses.
New twists- At the Winter Spectacular, you will see four (4) Spectacular Champions: A Superstock Leafer (10 laps) Champion, A Modified (10 laps) Champion, A IFS (10 lap) Champion, A Champ (20 laps) Champion complete with on track driver introductions. The 2014 Spectacular Champions will automatically secure a back row start for the 2015 Spectacular, this is in the event that they fail to qualify in 2015-a Past Champion Perk, if you will. **Classes will be posted later** You will see a mixture of class order being run. There is a covered grandstand and we will also have a heated "race village" where we will have food vendors, beer sales and bringing back the 70's favorite.HOT DR. Pepper!! We will have music played throughout the day during breaks, along with other things to do. We are exploring the idea of the F-500 class with a Final, and a Non Qualifier final where the winner of the Non- qualifier will have his chance to move up to the "A" Main or keep the winnings.in that event, the 2nd place finisher would advance to the "A" Main. IF the Winner chooses to advance, then the winnings would be spread on down to 2-5th or 5th -10th . You will see Junior classes and women's classes with no entry fee. We will have LONG TOW Awards-gas cards for the longest tow from Canada, MN, WI, IL and the longest overall (according to GPS, MapQuest) from registration address. We also have calls in to some "celebrities" to make appearances, either as drivers or "Grand Marshals". We are looking at a fast smooth track as we will have shaver, brooms, blades.we will start 10 on the front row and 2 on the back row for the finals. We are also exploring round robins for some of the vintage classes. We also have the luxury of the Speedway lights to run under lights-that may be a possibility. The Spectacular will also be a leg in the Wahl Bros Vintage Challenge. You will see customer service-we are going to be going around and thanking drivers for coming and gathering feedback. A lot more to come...
Format- Thursday, 1/30 will be a Test/Tune day, Friday, 1/31 will be heats/round robins, qualifiers-full show for Champs, Saturday, 2/1 will be all finals-another full show for Champs. We choose the Thursday, Friday and Saturday format which will allow drivers/crews to go home on Sunday and not have to take another day of work off. Our goal and we are working towards is that ALL classes will have some sort of payback (depending on sponsors/entries), Unique trophies, and a coat for class champions along with a checkered flag.
How will we succeed? When you have a trailer full of guys that have the same vision, work well together, have resources/contacts among them, share the debt/revenue equally, share the work equally-it's bound to be a win/win for drivers, spectators, sponsors and the City of Alexandria. We are very excited, enthusiastic and committed to this event. Our Marketing Plan includes a website by DigitalOpera (Vintagesleds.com), Social Media (Facebook), Internet Forums, word of mouth, posters/flyers, HayDays, Princeton, Midwest Outdoor Sports Show (Mpls), Douglas County fair, etc. We will have radio saturation in the Fargo, St. Cloud, Alexandria markets, and possibly some air time in the Chicago markets.
Updates-We will try and be transparent and post on here updates and field questions the best we can.
Save the date..January 30 - February 1, 2014 @ the Viking Speedway, Alexandria Mn.
SO, Grab a seat, Grab momma and hang on cuz' we're about to turn Ice Oval racing loose at the Historic "High Flyin' Half Mile". The Winter Spectacular..it's going be like watching jet fighters in a silo.
Regards-10GDP

Welcome news, and thanks go out to the 10GDP for getting it done. Viking Speedway is a great racing facility, with a large market of race fans close by. Should make for a spectacular event for racers, race fans, and sponsors that have came on board. To me it sounds like you have a winning combination already, and it's only your first year. Best of luck to you all, and thanks too

Sounds like a great event and a well thought out plan. Will this be sanctioned by an ISR affiliate that currently hosts events, or will 10GDP become an affiliate on their own?

Best of luck, lets hope Mother Nature gives you the best opportunity to be successful!

Great news indeed, although I've got to question the "30 year hiatus." I went to a race there in about 98 or 99 or so -- got Mike Houle on the cover of SW, if I remember right. Either way, Alexandria is a great, historic location that deserves a big race -- so great that you're making it happen!

Wow a dream come true, Im going to get to watch snowmobile ovals on the Viking speedway, close to home, 3 days of ovals, Vintage and modern sleds on the same weekend, and no sno cross. yes yes yes.

John the gentalman at the Ski Doo dealership in Alex told me Mike Houle has the track record there, and he said it is faster than any race car that has ever raced there, does anyone know if this is true.

Good Morning.
First, We (10GDP) are overwhelmed, appreciative and thankful for the kind words, the words of encouragement and positive responses via phone, email, texts and PM's. (Only 3 were slightly "jagged").
We have had a lot of vintage and Late Model drivers confirm at this this point that they are coming. I checked a couple hotels and they received reservations/bookings yesterday. WOW!

As information/decisions are made, we will do our best to post and answer questions.
Some that we have received:
-F500/Sport 600 combo class? CClass list is currently being defined, when we have it official (using best core classes), it will be posted.
-If any of 10GDP race, will you pay entry fees? Absolutely...that would only be fair and the right thing to do. We will be able to seperate: an event team hat to a driver's helmet.
-Ron Krog announcing? At this point in time, YES, we have a solid committment from Ron " The Voice of the Viking Speedway" to return to his usual announcing booth and crank it up!
-Will Vintage Modified Champion be a leafer class? Yes, the Modified Spectacular Champion will be a Mod Leafer class.
-Track length? It has not been shortent...it is a true 1/2 Mile, the banking is much higher...It is a very safe and fast track.
-Yes, the Viking Speedway was one of the original SnoPro Series tracks.
-Mr. Prusak,,,yes, you are correct. In 1997, USSA did run a race...it was heavily slighted and promoted as a SnoCross race (MRP or WSA) as SnoCross was in its infancy. Haikonen, Pake, Kirk Hibbert, Stuergeon, Devault, Ramesh were all here. At that point in time, Mike Houle set track record (I believe) on his Ski-Doo FIII which still stnads today...faster than the dirt cars.
-Will it be sanctioned and have/or what insurance? These are still in the works. It will either be sanctioned or a stand alone. As you know, Insurance purchased is different for a sanctioning body vs. stand alone...all options (pros and cons) are being explored at this time and as soon as something is official, it will be posted.
Thanks again...and we'll keep you in the loop.

Mr. Prusak-I was so busy trying to type and think at the same time.
After the 1997 race, I believe the 1998 race was canceled due to weather. No snow, or temps that were conducive to ice making as it was December 15-16. That is one reason the January 30, 31 - February 1 date was assigned to this event.
We also choose the verbage "30 year hiatus" for the plain fact....that the TRUE Dayco Holiday Spectacular ran from 74-85. Purely, going for historic and nostaglia.
Be well.

HMM?
I would have guessed that ORA would have saanctioned It with ISR. Ins?
Isnt it kind of an established ORA weekend?
seems like a pretty big undertaking not to have an experienced crew and some tech. especialy if you are going to put up some big money?
something to think about?
thanks for your hard work and efforts!
