89 Skidoo Rave Motor pulls over real "Funny"

My Rave 583 89' pulls over really hard, not like it's frozen, but like maybe the crank bearings are getting sticky, or contaminated.

When I used to pull the motor over, it used to swing around say three, or four revolutions per pull. Now it's only going two, or three at the most, and it's feeling like there's a drag on it somewhere.

Even with the belt off, and with the plugs out, it pulls over with real effort, and will not seem to be as "free wheeling" as it used to. It's got 7500 miles on the mains, and I'm sure it will need some looking at, but is there anybody that has seen a similar situation on a high mileage sled?

It will start, and runs fine, but I don't like it.

Any suggestions as to further diagnosing the potential causes of this symptom?

you got alot of miles sounds like time for a rebuild. eventually those bearing could screw up so a rebuild would be best. your also probably loosing hp to those old bearings too....

Have you removed the Y-pipe and peaked at the pistons? Pistons that are transferring aluminum to the cylinders,will still start and run good in the early stages of burn-down!Good Luck RB

I agree with you, but that should show up with a compression check and lower compression. Max, have you checked compression? Try this: With the plugs out, rotate engine by hand on clutch slowly in direction it runs, then turn it backwards listening for a noise in the bearings. I would just go ahead and rebuild while you can do it cheap tho..Thats a lot of miles on it. :)

How do you do a "lower"compression check?

Season is over for that sled. I'm taking it apart, and will let you know how it fares.

rebuild the recoil starter, see if that helps any
