DAM CAT Help!

Postby arcticatman » September 3rd, 2004, 6:18 am

Well guys, just finished putting the motor back into the El Tigre, had to put a new oil injection line in, and new fuel lines, filter, coil, ect. Now it leaks coolant, backfires like a cannon, and runs on one cylinder. I put pre-mix 50:1 in the tank, just incase there was air in the new oil injection lines. I'm used to messing with old sleds, my only question is: if there is air in the lines, how do I get it out? I'm about ready to sell it, but it has new plastic skis, track, and the whole nine yrds. Wada ya think? Where's the snow anyway? :-(

I just pull the oil pump wide open with some wire, run sled sled until it smokes like mad. Recheck all electrical connections for coils ,killswitch and ignition.Make sure the plug wires are not crossed.

Thanx, Jay, about the plug wires, does it really matter which wire goes where, on the new coil, both wires are the same length, how do u tell which one goes where?

DAM CAT Help!

Well, plug wires are all set now, thing stopped backfiring, and starts with one pull. But of course it has a new prob, as soon as I start it, it quickly climbs in idle speed, it gets to 3000-32000 and just idles like that by itself! If I give it a little throttle, it'll just keep climbing the RPM's just as if I was holding the throttle open. This is nuts, none of my sleds ever do this. It really doesn't smoke much, which is odd for this sled, I still think maybe it's not getting any oil.

You're leaking air. If you don't fix it the sled will lean out & fry the motor! Look for the smallest mistake. Maybe a washer in the wrong place creating a small air gap, a worn gasket, etc.... Also your oil pump should have a bleed screw. Find it & you can be sure to get rid of any air.

DAM CAT Help!

Check the obvious stuff first. Are both carb barrel slides in properly? Its very easy to have one or slides in 180 degrees off. Also if you rerouted the throttle cable it can cause that problem. (2)Pull the oil pump lever to the fully open position ,this will run the oil pump wide open at any throttle position. It will be easy to tell when the oil actually makes it to the motor.Very heavy smoke because the oil pump is pumping at max pump capacity.Check all three (twin carbs?)cables (both carbs and oil pump run off the throttle cable)for smooth operation.

DAM CAT Help!

FYI: All CDI equipped Cats fire both plugs at the same time. Switching the high tension leads around shouldn't change anything unless you have a bad end cap which would only transfer the problem from one cylinder to the other.
