What fuel to use?

Postby XCR600SP » November 24th, 2004, 1:37 am

I have a 96 XCR 600 SP and want to know what fuel I should use. It recommends 91 octane. The station close to where I live had 87, 89 and 94. I was planning on getting the 94 but there gas has ethanol added. Should I go somewhere else to get the fuel. Will this gas with ethanol harm my engine? Any info would be great.
Thanks in Advance

DO NOT under any circumstance use fuel with ethanol in your sled, qaud, dirtbike, or any two-stroke powered ride! The stuff will wash the oil off of the bearings and cylinder walls. Bad news man. I cant speak for other manufacturers, but Polaris recomends against using it. If you use the closest rated fuel to what is recomended, w/o ethanol you should be just fine.

In our state all fuel has ethanol.

bummer... My friend works at a dealer, and when I went pick up my new sled, he was telling me about do's and donts, he took me back and showed me what happens after you run ethanol for a while. He had a set of pistons from a XC500 that needed replaced because the owner ran ethanol, wasnt pretty. Thrust side especially was scored bad.
I dont know if there is some additive to help prevent problems from ethanol, but it might be worth looking into.

I've had to use ethonal several times--no problems with the oil injection, BUT----it's not good at all on pre-mix sleds. It does seem that it just does not stay mixed well in the tank. I had bought what I thought was non-oxygenated fuel at a station in town, mixed it up, went out on the lake and promptly siezed the engine. I got it to turn over, dumped another bottle of oil in and ran it very carefully. Went back to the gas tation where I bought it--turns out only 1 of the premium pumps had the non-oxygenated, not all of them. I was just a little more than ticked???????? I would guess that if ethanol is all you can get, run a little extra oil and baby it until you can get some good stuff.
I would think that the oil injected engines should be designed for this gas, as it is becoming more and more the only gas available.
