Can anyone tell me the difference between the SC-10, SC-3, and the SC-4 rears in the Skippy-Doo's. Is one that much better then the other?

yes, they are different. The sc-10 is the oldest found in 1998 models. Then they came out with sc-10 2, sc-10 3, and sc-10 4. Sc-10 4 being the newest and the best.

if my memory serves: SC10 was '96-'99, SC10 II was '00 only, SC10 III was '01-'05, SC4 is '06-?.

there is a huge difference between SC10 and SC10 III. i've never ridden a sled with SC10 II (only one season, didn't hear many glowing reviews) nor have i ever ridden or heard reports on the new SC4 skid, so i can't quantify the improvement over the SC-10 III.

if you're shopping for a used sled, IMHO you would do well to score one with the SC10 III.

There were 2 version of the original SC 10

One was a falling Rate 95-03 on fancools and 96-98 SLS/Formula 500,96 STX and 97 Formula 583

The rising rate was used 96-99 MXZ LC and 96-99 FZs(except670)

The SC 10 II was used in 99.5 MXZ 700 and 2000-01 on the LC models and some 02 Models

The SC 10 III was used 02-05 LC models as well as the 04-04 Fancools

The SC 10 4 was used in 05 the MachZ and MXZ X models and now most 06 models

all depends on what you want to spend $200 for a sc-10 like #350 for sc-10 2 450 for sc-10 3 and prob like 500-600 for sc-10 4

All of the suspensions systems vary in ride, depending on what shock is used, too. As mentioned, the original SC-10 had falling rate shocks (for cruising) and stiffer, rising rate shocks for performace (MXZ's). That was the 1'st generation long travel. A version with ACM a rear to front, only, coupling system was thrown in on some models. An improvement. SC-10 II was their 1st fully coupled suspension and a huge improvement. My recollection is that is was new for 2001. I bought an '01 Formula Deluxe with Motion Control shocks and it was nice. I then bought my current, 02 Legend w/SC-3. These have 12" of travel. On the Legend, it has variable rate shocks that make stutter bumps nearly disappear, but still handles bigger bumps fairly well. The MXZ's use stiffer HPG's and sometimes HPG VR's to handle big bumps at speed. The SC-4 is designed specifically for the rider forward position of the REV's and RT chassis with more emphasis on the front arm, rather than the rear as other suspensions. For '05, it has been known by some as a slider eater. Don't know if proper adjustments cured that, or not. I'd vote for the SC 3 and pick shocks for how you ride.
