96 skidoo f3 has me puzzled

Postby speednutt » February 20th, 2002, 10:24 am

i have just purchased a 96 formula 3 600 triple for a cheap price.

i am unable to get the mag side cylinder to fire. The engine starts rather easily but only on the pto and center cylinders. i have good spark, 135lbs of compression (115lbs on the first pull) and i have plenty of gas.

When i have the engine running the mag side pipe will fill up with unburnt fuel and the plug will always come up wet.

i have changed coils around to see if anything would change. i have put in a new needle and seat as well.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not to sound, or make you sound stupid, but in your post you say nothing about changing the plugs. Have you changed the plug? It could be fouled.
If you get your friend to hold the plug cap on the chaincase side cylinder and then get him to throw a finger from his other hand on the head of the motor while you pull it over will he get shocked?
Have you checked all of the connections to your coils and your CDI?
Is there spark when you pull the plug out, set it on the head and pull the engine over?
When you switch the cap positions from each coil to different cylinders does the new plug that has the suspected coil connected to it come up flooded too?
There are so many things I can think of, please narrow this down for me.
Thanks.

the spark is great in all cylinders and yes i have tried new plugs. i have checked all the connections at the coil as well as the cdi box. i come up with nothing. The flooding did not follow the coil (from one cylinder to the next) when i swapped them. the problem is confined to the mag cylinder or the cdi box.

i generally have a good nack at finding this sort of problem, just not this time.

my only guess is to try another cdi box to see if that makes a difference.

thanks for you help. any other questions let me know.

i have run 440s in the past but found this 600 for only $500.00 . the past owner was unable to figure out the problem either i guess.

Replace the floats in the carbs, I have seen this before on a older Vmax. We replaced everything we could think of, turns out the floats wouldn't float, hence there was nothing to stop the fuel flow. Take the bowls off of the carb, fill it with fuel and see if the float rises all the way to the top, if it doesn't replace it.

we have made progress. i checked the floats and they are in working order problem still there. however i swithed carbs with the center cylinder and now the problem followed the carb. the good new is that the mag cylinder is working again.

still no idea what is wrong with the carb. i have replaced the needle and seat and have checked the float height.

any suggestions ie: crack in the carb somewhere???

let me know. we are very close to haveing this thing figured out.

If it followed the carb, you got er nailed. Needle, seat, float height?
A picture is worth a thousand words.
