Sledding accidents kill 2 in U.P.
MARQUETTE - Two people were killed in separate snowmobile accidents in the Upper Peninsula Friday night
At about 8 p.m., deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff's Department responded to an accident on Trail No. 17, a half mile east of Tecumseh Road in Osceola.
Patrick Thomas Cassin, 19, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., was pronounced dead at the scene, after his southbound snowmobile collided head-on with a northbound machine driven by 30-year-old Andrew R. Gresens of Chebanse, Ill, according to the sheriff's department.
Gresens and his 16-year-old passenger, Kristyn Marie Cassin of Elk Grove Village, were transported by Mercy Ambulance to Keweenaw Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released for their injuries, according to hospital staff.
Around 8:30 p.m., deputies from the Alger County Sheriff's Department responded to an accident on Trail No. 89, about four miles north of Hurricane River Truck Trail.
Sandra Lynn Pillow, 36, of downstate Grand Blanc, was killed when she failed to navigate a turn and struck a tree, according to the sheriff's department.
CPR was performed on Pillow on the scene and she was transported to Munising Memorial Hospital by Alger County EMS services. She was pronounced dead on arrival.
The two fatalities bring the number of snowmobilers killed in the Upper Peninsula this winter to 10. Statewide, at least 19 snowmobilers have been killed in accidents. During the winter of 2003-04, 12 snowmobilers were killed in the U.P. and 29 statewide.
