Three people were killed over the Christmas weekend in two Vilas County snowmobile accidents. The bodies of a man and his son were recovered yesterday from Rest Lake in Manitowish Waters. Authorities said they went riding on the lake Sunday night, and never returned. Also, a 50-year-old man from Land O'Lakes was killed early on Christmas Day, when his snowmobile hit a tree next to Black Oak Lake. The victims' names were not immediately released. The state D-N-R and the Vilas County Sheriff's Department continue to investigate both crashes.

Hate to hear it, MM. Especially the lake ones..too early, and not enough ice in many places, and some places with springs, never.

This not good.....and guess what the lead story was on every radio station, tv station (and newspaper) up here???....yep....and once again snowmobilers look irresponsible, and dumb......what do you think the non snowmobiler said when he picks up his paper and reads the lead story: "3 snowmobilers killed over holiday weekend".....I bet he says " Snowmobilers are are dumbazzes" ....you know what I mean???...no offense to the people who died, or their families...but that is how the general public(non riders) view us

The lakes here in Northern Wisconsin are marked by the clubs which means they are safe to ride. I think they went through near the Rest Lake dam which stays open all year-it comes down to not knowing the area or insufficient marking of open water. What are we at this year for deaths in WI MM-I want to say 6-7 already?

Can't rely on anyone for safe ice...check it our yourself. I've ridden on green stuff before...my risk, my decision. Could be springs, and thin ice, like I said. You never know.

I knew the guy(Bob) from Land O' their is a fallen tree that sticks out 40' from shore and is about 3' off the ice, water whatever, we have to go around it with the 4-wheeler to get to our ice-fishing spot... Anyways, he hit it pretty hard and decapitated himself....
