1970 Polaris Charger-Help!

Postby Polaris_03 » March 8th, 2004, 12:56 pm

Hi guys. I have a 1970 Polaris Charger with a 530 f/c engine. I got the sled for free and it is in grat shape. Anyway, I got it running and went for a test ride. It topped out at a whopping 40 mph. Were these old sleds that slow or is the gearing too low? I cleaned the carbs and clutch and no difference. Any of you guys have experience with getting these old sleds up to speed. I would think it should get up to at least 60 with a little tuning? Any help is greatly appreciated. Also looking for decals and engine parts for this sled. Mostly looking for red seat material. Thanks again.

I think the first year the 530cc engine was used was 1972 It should hit 65mph on a nice cold day. I think those engines are Free Air. what was the temperature when you were riding it? those old free airs dont take to kindly to 50 degree weather could drastically decrease perfromance. other than that Sounds like to me that it needs a good ol' tune up. clean/replace the points and reajust them to the proper gap. fool around with the carb adjustments if that doestn't help

Thanks for the reply. The engine is out of a 1972 Charger. It is fan-cooled and has cdi ignition. I have already cleaned the carbs, clutch, and changed lines and filter. Would it help to put a smaller gear in? Any suggestions?

how is the belt on it? Is is worn? is it the correct belt? If it the belt is even off a quarter inch from the prefered belt size it will deplete perfromance

I just replaced the belt thsi morning and I gained another 5 mph. I also moved the engine over a little because there was a lot of wear on one side. Must not have had it lined up just right. ANy ideas on gearing? Thanks.

The charger was polaris "sport car" and high performance sled it wasn't geared for lower speeds Tht sled has 36 hp and should hit 60mph. What octane gas you running and what plugs? That charger should require 90 octane or higher.

Check the specs for the distance between the clutches, this can also gain a few mph. Also, track tension and also chain tension in the chaincase if it doesn't have auto adjusters, make sure there is oil in there, too.

I am running BRES8's for plugs. I have tried both NGK and Champion and get the same result. I have also checked the case fluid and it is fine. I have only been running 87 octane gas and have been mixing it 30 to 1. I guess I could lean it out a bit. I tightened the chain a little and check the track. It clips along at about 50 now. A lot better then 40. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help.

i would suggest using premium gas 90 octane or higher becauase of the higher compression. and i would mix in 40:1 instead of 30:1 and you should get the maximum perfomance out of it. Besides that tehre isn't much else you can do. Maybe iwth the higher octane less oil and a little break in time you will get it up to 60 or so
