2002 ZR500 Performance parts?

Postby lawdog800 » December 7th, 2001, 8:23 am

HAs anyone out there had any experience with the powervalved ZR500 with the exhauste pipe sensor, and doing mods. I have not ridden the sled yet, but I want to see what is recommended as I dropped down to the 500 from a ZR800 last year. I am considering twin Pipes, but wanted to kinow if anyone has used them and what kind. I am looking at D&D (not in stock do not know when) or Black Magic, who has the pipes in stock.
Ialready have v-force reeds.

Don't start messing with the twin pipes on this sled. That single pipe with PTS is a great unit. Why do you think there are no after market singles for this sled? Because they cannot make a better one. You are definately going to feel you lost someting going from 800cc to 500cc. But this 500 makes 97 ponies out of the crate and with a little clutching and maybe a jet or gear change, you will run with most 600's.
If you put the twin pipes on, the sled will become a lot more finickier. You'll for sure have to clutch and jet different and then finding the right combo will take some time. It's your sled but I wouldn't pipe it. Too costly for the little amount of gain and the big headache you will have.

Good Luck!

I don't understand why you would drop down to a 500 then spend hundreds even thousands on mods to make it faster. Why didn't you just buy a 600?

I bought a 500 this year because it was the early release with the Sno Pro suspension,a-arms and Clickers all the way around. My 800 and I had an unexpected 129 ft flight, that earned me a ride in an ambulane to Grayling Mercy Hospital and a Destroyed sled. I hit a bump of some sort, my riding partners described it a about 2 1/2 to 3 ft frost bulge or a snow pile left by a groomer in a seasonal road. It was flat and smooth and straight for over 2 miles, then all of a sudden I was in the air, at somewhere around 90 mph. The wind got under the front end and it started blowing over backwards, so I ejected. The DNR officer paced out the distance from the bump to the crater the sled left when it landed tail first, at 129 ft.
I consider myself lucky I can still walk, I landed on my lower back and compressed a disc, but nothing broken.
Anyway I think the 500 should be good for the trails, but i just want a good punch out of the corners. I figure I saved $1000.00 over a 600 and 2000.00 over another 800.

Well so far I have not heard anything good about using twins on this little sled. Maybe ai will just go with the Black magic Mono-Block Head kit with the higher compression pump gas inserts.

I bought the Black MAgic Mono-Block head and put it on the sled.. I did a compression test before and after the instal, using the pump gas inserts with the head. NO CHANGE in cylinder pressure. 100 P.S.I. stock and with the new head. I guess I will be faster because my wallet is lighter....I also got the Speedwerx clutch kit installed, Have not ridden yet, but it raised engagement from 4500 to 5000 rpm./

I have heard and read many times, that people that stepped upo to a 600 from a 500 ZR, were very dissapointed. Probobly only a bit quicker due to a lighter wallet....

Also, an update on the Black Magic head....I was corrected in a different posting on this board, titled : Hey lawdog800, that the cylinder head will change compression ratio, without changing cylinder pressure, so maybe the head will be a performance increase after all.
