My zl 500 was radared at 97.I have seen speed run results up to about 101.The 500 runs good on hardpack but will slow done more than a larger engine thru snow.

zl5 - Try playing around with the clutching a little. I have a Polaris 500 and I picked up 7 miles per hour on top end just by fooling around with the clutches. I'm not going to tell you what speed I hit because I don't need some foul-mouthed punk telling me that speedos don't compare to radar guns. The fact remains that I increased my top end.

For comparison, my buddy had an '01 XC-SP 500 which has a little more HP than yours and he usually topped out about 95-100.

That's a neat little sled you have; play around with it and have fun.

My wife's '98 ZL5 would top out at 100-105 on the speedo riding an icey lake with little or no snow cover. A couple inches of granular cut 10-15mph off of it.
They're a quick sled, but they fall off faster than a bigger motor.

Is there any cheep thing that I can do to make it faster? Like gears, clutch kit, clutch parts, or reeds?

Any help would be great.

Clutching will help some, maybe a good pipe, but stick with the stock can. Maybe some porting. Keep in mind any of this will affect trailability, and it is only a 500 so don't expect miracles.

the zl is a helluva sled but if you are studded this is probably closer to your true speed. Nonstudded sleds spin their tracks and read much higher on speedo. Go to a radar run and you will see the truth. Speedos are off some more than others.

ZL5 your sled is very nice, even though it hit the big 4,000 mile mark. Don't worry about it! I think I will ask the same question about my Phazer. Just for the heck of it! But like I say if it ain't broke don't fix it, well you know what I mean. Hey and I mean you should be happy you ain't riding the Tin Can-Phazer, what the crap? Here I am smashing my sled, for 5,800 miles-not to bad. YOUR SLED IS NICE, JUST LEAVE IT?!?!?!

STAY BETWEEN THE LINES!
