problems with 97 mxz

Postby jdog101 » February 3rd, 2003, 4:35 pm

i have a 97 mxz 440 that i installed an sc-10II in over the summer. i also pulled the chaincase apart to make sure it was in good condition, which it was. when i took my sled out last night to ride it for the first time the sled made a ratcheting sound, which is usually the chaincase or a loose track, so i made sure the track was tigh and it still makes the noise. what else could it be? any help is great.
thanks

Do you notice a bog or loss of power when you hear the ratcheting noise? Try tightening your track more. Have you looked in the chaincase agian yet?

You'll think I'm kidding, but we had a '97 MXZ583 on a trip once with that same symptom. Tried everything, took case apart twice, etc. We finally tried loosening the track, and presto! No more noise. If you know everything else is set up correctly, try loosening the track.

FYI, this sound he started hearing was right after he just installed a new track and studs. Sound familiar, eh?

Actually now that I think about it when I got a new track on my Mxz 583 it came from the dealer really tight and made a clicking or ratcheting(very slight, not as noticeable as if the track was actually ratcheting) noise for a little bit until it stretched out some. My track was really tight, at first it restricted movement of the suspension.

Did you install new sliders as well? The noise most of these people are describing is the sound of the track clips coming off the back of the sliders when the track is tight. the sliders may have been cut a little to long. file the back of the sliders so they are angled.

i put on a new belt today just in case and it seems to have solved the problem. seems weird, because old belt looks to be in good shape (not missing any teeth). thanks for all the help. now its time to enjoy the snow
