indy top end speed

Postby IndyTrlDlx » December 11th, 2003, 1:08 pm

hey, i am the owner of a 1995 indy trail deluxe, it has a 133 inch track, and a 488cc fan motor. my problem is with top end speed, flat out its slow, i have a strong bottom end (leave huge piles off the line) but it won't pass 80mph (ever!) i was wondering if anyone can tell me why this is, and how i can improve this number, i really don't like running even with a 380 formula, i know i should be faster. if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

80 MPH out of a 488? I'd say thats pretty fast for that sled. Or do you mean KPH? That would be slow (about 50 MPH).

No, its 80mph at the max, about 75 on the lake, but it always feels like it is holding back, i can drag a 380 formula s and be dead even, im pretty sure it has more in it, but im not sure how to free it up

I used to have the same sled except for a 1997. It would get about 83 on the speedo so I don't know if you are that far off.

not too shabby for a two up trail sled with probably less than 50hp's (just a guess). my wife has an 02 supersport (550 fan) and is lucky to see 80 miles per. remember your sled really wasn't built to be a lake racer. be happy with 80. also, i'd be really impressed with a 380 fan that would reach 80....almost hard to believe

just wondering if anyone knows what good compression levels are in a 488 fan, i have 119lbs in both sides, is this normal, high, low?

i know i have a friend with a 97 trail and he can walk from me top end, which makes me ask questions about my own, any help is appreciated, or i might just have to consider a upgrade (kinda looking for an excuse now)

Thanks again

80mph - according to the speedo on the sled...You can't use that to gage your correct speed, thats just track spin.
Use a GPS, get exact speed. Id say it won't go over 70mph.
Ride it like you stole it.

bundt, I'm with you. I had a nieghbor who had a 488 trail. his speedo said near the same, my 89 MX would read on the speedo 85 top, wound out and I would walk away from him so bad on top end it wasn't funny.

Polaris's are know for having speedo's that read "Way" "Way" fast. I think it helps them sell sleds, if people think their that fast.

I would say your trail goes more like 70MPH.

Don't think so? go read the how fast is my 440 sno jet on the vintage board. There's a post that lists poll speeds at a race. The Indy 500 posted a poll speed of 91MPH. I don't think the great water cooled 500 indy(twin or the old tripple) would only have 6 MPH(in race form no less) on the fan cooled trail indy.

Take Care
