What year is the 500? general condition of both sleds? The zr5 will be faster without a doubt, but The 550 in the Cougar is a pretty stout motor, they're pretty much bulletproof, and the es & reverse are pretty much what the doctor ordered. I wouldnt hesitate to but a 98 Cougar deluxe for my wife, if the sled was in nice shape.

The cougar will Ride softer and the clutching wont rip her off the back, and better gas milage.

Beware of the Cougar throttle. My wife had a 96 and after a few miles her thumb killed her. We all tried it and agreed! I got a Cruisemate flipper and it was better. Only kept it a year and sold it. Everyone that I saw driving one had the same problem. My wife drove my old 97 ZR for 2 seasons and loved it.

Hi Greenman.
I agree with the other's, go with the Cougar. My wife has a 97 Cougar with the bullet proof 550. Not a speed demon, but gives a real comfortable ride, easy on gas and oil, easy to maintain. I put on an electric start and reverse for her, which makes it a real dandy sled for the ladies. My only other suggestion is to put in 96 trail studs and a good set of trail runners, and a nice pair of plastic skis. The ZR is also a great sled, but the ride is harsh and the clutching much more agressive. Good luck and happy riding this winter
