I was recently given a '92 Polaris 440 with only about 700 miles on the ticker...appearently the oil pump failed and thus causeing the engine to seize and self destruct...I'm having trouble finding any engines, anyone know where to look, I'd prefer it to be as close to Washington State as possible, but I'd coincider traveling to Oregon or Idaho if I have to-hell-maybe even B.C. if it was worth the drive....also, anyone with any info/advise on what else I should do to get this thing running??-What I mean is since the engine seized should I possibly look into finding a tranny??-That is if snowmobiles even have tranny's-I'm a rookie at owning these things...I've ridden for years, but they were my fathers sleds-Also Any and all info on these particular sleds would help me!!! thanks!!!

One good place to look is Ebay, you usually see a motor pop up on there quit a bit. You can even find triples to put in that chassis (with the quick change of a mounting plate). I sold my EDGE 440 motor on there to a guy in NY even.

Why don't you just rebuild it? If you do most of the work yourself it isn't that expensive. That way you know your not getting a dog motor.

Yes, I guess I didn't really read the post, just the heading. You would be a lot better off rebuilding it. All you have to do is take the top end apart (head, jugs and pistons). Buy 2 new piston kits from Polaris or Wiseco (piston, rings, c-clip and wrist pin) and send the jugs out to Millenium Tech for recoating on the inside surface. Have them Nicasiled. It would cost you around $400 for both cylinders, $150-$200 for the both pistons and around $50 for a top end gasket kit. You can tear the top end of it down in 30min no problem. And after getting all the parts you should be able to have it fired up within 2 hrs of putting it back together.

Here's the phone# to Millenium tech:

Anybody that deals with snowmobile engines has the ability to ship them to you. Also, some snowmobile engines can not be rebuilt it the lower case is cracked or damaged.

i live in e. wa you can easily find a 700 twin in this area for around a grand if you know where to look. also if you are real desperate for help call vinnie at motor worxs in priest lake id. and he knows of about every used engine for sale within 200 miles of there. i hope this helps. i think that rebuilding what you have is a huge waste of time and money just my take.
