'99 ZR 600 EFI Fuel Economy

Postby Maniac » November 29th, 2001, 8:45 am

My buddys '99 ZR EFI is just evil on gas. The only thing changed on this sled was the clutch, a comet was installed before he bought it, otherwise it is bone stock. He gets really bad gas mileage. Like around 30 miles to a tank of gas, max. Is there anything he could check to see if this is normal or not? Also what recommended modifications should he make to his sled (black magic chip or something?).
Thanks.

I just traded in my '99 600EFI and I would always get between 100-120miles/tank. Not great, but much better than the other posts here.

It was stock except for 144-studs.

Maybe he's assuming he's empty because the junk guage on it. Usually as it gets near the 'E', you've still got some left. I always set the trip and went by that instead. But 30-miles is not possible!!!

Also, maybe his cap was changed and the guage isn't as long as it should be? Just thinkin'...

At 30 miles to the tank you'd be eat'n plugs something fearce also, if it ran at all pouring that much fuel in an engine. It'd be like running with the choke on all the time. double check actual milage ( fill-up, ride, fill-up again, divide miles riden by gallons used) it will give a better indacation of whats happening better than saying 30 miles to the tank. I think it should be around 10 mpg for that sled_________DREW

catmandoo2002000, I got 14 to 16 mpg on my 01 ZL800 carb, you should get about the same, 120 to 140 miles before worrying about gas________DREW

Sounds like you have a major faulty chip problem.

I use to have a 98 ZR600 EFI LE and I was one of the last guys (fullest tank) needing to fill up again. That's even after that beast was piped, chipped, clutched, and V-Force reeds added.

That 600 with over 120hp sure was fun without sacrificing gas mileage! I hope my new ZR800 EFI X-country will get some sweet mileage too!
