How thick is the Ice near you?

Hey hair, you know for a fact the yahoos will be out buzzin around the causeway this weekend. Same as the whackjobs that will be out on Scugog looking for a good spot to take a dip. I went down to the boatlaunch on Tues. night, and there was tracks where people had been out walking. More than likely the same dudes getting ready to hit the 40 of Rye, then see just how much ice there is on Chemong Lk, Scugog, Rice Lk, whatever.

Well I haven't had a chance to check lately but if I had to guess I'd say that there are at least 4-6 inches in most ponds.

3-4" is safe for snowmobiles. Just watch for areas that have currents, as the ice may be thinner in some spots than where you checked.

5-6 " is safe for pickup trucks

12" is safe for fully loaded semis, but keep speed under 5 mph. The reason most trucks go down is because they start pushing a wave, and when the wave hits shore and bounces back at them, the ice breaks.
(These numbers assume good quality ice, not frozen slush.

(My dad used to be a truck-driver on winter roads, all they are is frozen lakes, rivers, muskeg.)

Silver Lake here in Western NY is just starting to skim over with ice...won't be rideable for awhile yet as warm weather is coming next week...I wait until I see a zillion ice fishermen out there...

7" on the small lake I live on, maybe 4" in the middle, even though I know where all the currents run and the soft spots are you wont catch my ass out on that lake on anything but foot for another week or so, I wait till there is 8-10" on the sides so that there will be 6+ in the middle before I trust it at anything less than 80MPH
THATS outrageous....... outrageous
