OT: Credit cards that earn "points"

Postby Drifthopper » May 21st, 2003, 2:21 am

Other then, say like the GM Card (points/dollars toward a new vehicle)or Discover (a percentage back), what are some of the other cards out there that "pay you back" or that you can earn "points" when you charge items?
Are some better then others?
Any suggestions?

citi bank drivers edge, earns money back towards purchase of ANY vehicle, new or used, including trailers. Buy a vehicle, send in receipt, so the seller never knows you have the points.

Only collects 2% though, as opposed to GM 5%

Northwest Air has cards the give you ff miles. If you like to travel the free airline tickets would be nice(If you have enough miles).

I don't know if you have them in the US, but we have something called airmiles. they are roughly equivalent to frequent flyer, except you get a cart that you can use to get points at grocery stores, lumber yards, etc. You can also collect them with a credit card. In turn, you can cash them in for stuff, not just flights. appliances, stereos, football game tickets, harley davidson, etc.

Credit cards are OK but always pay off the balance monthly. If you can't afford to don't own one. At the interest rates these companies are charging they should be put in prison. Loansharking is illegal. Forget about the miles as the airline industry blows. as for the auto discounts...... just negotiate a good deal an the car or truck.

Credit cards are like leprosy. Just a slow agonizing death. The only good thing about them is.....SQUAT. The points or miles you gain by buying aren't worth much compared to what that money costs you. Very few can use one responsibly. Are those points or miles THAT valuable? IMHO

Everyone needs the conveniency of a credit card on occasion, but they sure can get you in lots of trouble if not used carefully. I've had a GM card for years, but that thing is getting sh*t canned here any day now. Soon they are reducing the pay back from 5% to 1%- That sucks! Think I'am going to start looking for one that pays FF miles, since I like to fly sometimes.

There's more to know to this. All of us pay interest on the bill, and the merchants who accept them also pay 3% of the sale amount directly to the card issuers. In essence they get it now, and much more as they go on. I dream of the day I can take the cards and run them through the food processor(credit card cole slaw).
