Riding the rails again...

Being in da club has neat bennies....we get to cruise in these putt-putt cars...doing serious club related work of course, and the beers are strictly for the powerful thirst we work up...NH law is a gray area concerning these rail cars...there's no law saying we can not drink and ride them...we know because one of our active members is a sherriff..he said it's Ok as far as the law goes..thats all we had to hear...I don't drink beer much but it's hard not to when clicking down the track on one of these...

They're are scheduled to inspect the tracks prior to the opening of the tracks to trains. And scheduled to whenever inspection/maintenance are needed.

By the looks of it (ie. the green grass, leaves, tall dry grass, decrepit/buried rail-ties, etc...) those tracks were last used by President Eisenhower and his staff.

Looks like fun. What are you guys doing?

The tracks are no longer active. We groom a 14 mile stretch (you're looking at it here) and this was a spring shake down run with 2 cars, looking for flood damage and downed trees. We are applying for a 30,000 dollar grant to begin filling the railbed with crushed stone...our low snow winters have made the tracks a death trap...can't even groom them because the rails show a lot..Since some rails are missig and some spots have spikes sticking up we tend to have a lot of sleds get wrecked..people hurt...and the drag catches these "hooks" and shears the break-away pin leaving the drag behind the tucker...and it's a royal pain to re-hook it. Plus, there are 3 sets of switches, and THESE sumbiches will REALLY ruin yer day...It takes 10 men and a small boy to un-stick a sled caught in the switches..
How many yards will it take to lay 8" of stone 12' wide for 14 miles?

Answer: A shiotload...30K is a drop in the bucket, but we gots ta start sometime..here's a pic of a small dump cart...it swivels around so you can dup to either side. Has a pony motor to run the hydrolics..

Before you ask, we have access to a much larger dump car and engine along with a new 60 HP tractor on rail wheels...and the rails can't be removed because the Cotton Valley Rail Trail Club
"owns" the use of these tracks in summer...and since the railbed is owned by the state of NH....and a major rail line owns the right to re-develop these rails at any time...lots of facets to it.

That can't be official bizznazz, no one is wearing a "trail patrol" skirt.
