This is not a racing question, but a question on how something is printed and read.
It's in other articles as well but, on page 36, second column, quoting Kuster. (Also at the end where Ward is being quoted)
What are those brackets suppose to mean?
"[The track is]rock hard. People are going to be breaking [parts] everyhere."
Did Kuster say that "the track is rock hard, or did he just say "rock hard" and Snow Week puts "the track is" in brackets so the readers know that he is talking about the track.
I must of been snowmobiling that day my course covered this, so could someone (Blake) explain how those brackets are being used and how should a reader interpret what is being said or how it is being conveyed.
Thank You.

The brackets are used to clarify a statement or quote by somebody. You'll see it in newspapers and magazines. The brackets are words editors include in quotes to put quotes in context. Using your example, Kuster probably said, "It's rock hard. People are going to be breaking things everywhere." To make the quote relate to what he was talking about (the track)we sometimes need to add clarifying words and statements to quotes.

In your example, we asked Kuster about the track and his response was something like the quote above. But to put it into context for you and other readers, we needed to add words to it, and those are in the brackets.

In the case of [parts] Kuster actually said sh*t so we felt it best to edit that one.
