ive got a 78 yamaha exciter 440 sitting here in my yard. ive driven it many times and know its has some balls for a old beater sled. i was just wondering if it was a sled to compete with back in the day?

for a fan cooled sled they are pretty fast and light. mainly because the cylinder reed design, and everything is aluminum excpet the bulkhead. i have heard they do about 80mph stock, but it must have some pretty tall gears to go that fast.

they seem to do pretty good at the local vintage drags.

It was one of the quicker sleds from yamaha that would stay together, have a few around here that just keep going. Although it would not hang with the srx, it would be running while the srx was being rebuilt(again). Good, reliable power.

Great sled bullet proof, me and one of my friends
have one they go between 75-85mph stock I think they would be a strong sled back in the day.

Love those old exciters! I drag raced a 77 EX440 in the early 80's and won a ton of races with it and a jr. championship in 84( I was 15 then)scary how fast time flys. They were bulletproof.top end was 80ish. They ran hard with the ss440,the 5000 eltigre's etc. Good luck.
