I get one of these things from time to time but nowhere near the numbers you guys are saying. Maybe 1-2 per week. I had no idea my name was showing up as a sender.

I wonder how big an azzhole someone has to be to even come up with an idea like a computer virus. I think hard manual labour would take some of that time off their hands.

Spammers and hackers are always looking for SMTP POP Mail Servers to relay through, and it is up to the System Administrator at Ehlert (actually I believe it is Affinity Group) to block this from happening. I would surmise this is why the member directory has disappeared, but that is sort of like shutting the door after the horses all got out. Not only have they allowed open relaying, but they seem to have allowed mail from outside of their domain name to be relayed as if it originated internally. I actually received an e-mail from "snowmobilenews" saying they were sending me a WinXP patch for me to load on my comuter. It is ridiculous that this is happening, and Ehlert sould shut down their external e-mail capabilities until they get it fixed, before the Internet police shut it down for them.

It's not our system sending the e-mail. Ever heard of the Klez virus?

This is what is happening: Someone's computer gets the Klez virus. The virus attacks the e-mail software and starts sending e-mails out to the addresses in that computer's address book. BUT, here's the kicker. The virus "spoofs" another computer so it appears that the message is coming from someone other than who is actually generating the mail. I have been getting anywhere from 10-20 of these messages a day in all six of the affinitygroup e-mail accounts I have to check. Basically it makes the virus harder to catch.

There is little we can do to stop the virus, it doesn't attack our database, it attacks individual e-mail accounts. The only thing you can do is make sure your anti-virus is up to date and you download the patches from your virus protection company as they are available.

Finally, if you believe it is our problem, and we're just ingnoring it, then please let me know. I can have your profiles deleted from the database if you like. You won't be able to post of course, but if SlapNuts is right, you won't get phantom e-mails either.
