TOP SPEED ON A ZL 500

Postby zl5 » January 19th, 2003, 11:35 am

Just got back from the u.p. The riding was great. While I was up there I decited to race my friends xcr 600 on Lake Gogeibec. I would smoke him off the line up till 80mph. Then he would pull away. He sad he got 110mph out of that xcr. Heres the problem. I can not even get 100mph out of my 1999 ZL 500 carb I could only get 95mph out of it the rpms were running around 8700. The race was about 2 miles long and I had it pined all the way from the starting line. Is this the best speed I am going to get out of my sled. Has any one got a higher top speed than this. If so what is wrong, and how can I make it faster w/o meny mods.

Totally depends on conditions, remember it is only a 500. Sounds like your RPM's are a little high, and some clutching is in order, shouldn't be much over 8200-8300, also depending on conditons.

#1 Its only a 500....I should do better than that

#2 The target rpm range is right I looked in the book

#3 The jetting was only off a little

#4 The wear rod grooves in the snow were all going the same way it was hard pack with no wind.

ZL5, 95 is about all you can get. It's only a 500. They are a very respectable 500 too. Your deal sounds alot like my brother and I. He pulls me on low end and at 70-75 mph I blow by him. If you're getting 95 mph and it rides good, enjoy it,it's a hell of a little sled. Otherwise, I see cat just released the F6,that would work for you........ride on man!!!!

dude your f**king zl 500 will only do 85 mph tops...the speedo might say 95 but on a gun it'll only do 85...the reason you beat this kid off the line is cause his clutching might be agusted for top end...it seems to be like that if you can beat him on your little zl 500

I am looking for any one who has this sled or has rode one insted of bashing my sled and saying its slow and confusing me with your f-ing bull s**t. If I wanted your f-ing bull s**t I would have asked for it. So please be quiet it if you dont know. I mean what the hell my dads 99 zl 600 efl can f-ing peg the spedo. And thats only rated at 13 more hp than mine. And he weighs 120 more pounds than me. If it is true and it only goes that fast what can I do to make it as fast as my dads.

Sorry, I am just a little peeed off.

No bash zl5 thats the truth. My wifes would do 105 with a tailwind. Maybe a gearing change would help top end but it would hurt midrange.
