ULTRA 680 OR ZL 500?

Postby Swap » October 6th, 2002, 3:30 pm

The Ultra has ok power, similar to a 600, but the d**n thing weighs as much as a toyota. So there is no doubt in my mind that a ZL500 is quicker

Ultra no doubt

:)

Ultras are not as slow as some will lead to believe:)

Now there are other variables, like are they tuned up, clutched correctly and so on

Well if I was going to predict, I would say the Cat 'til about 75-80? Then the triple would probably catch up. Get in some snow and then try it too. FYI: A 680 Triple is one of the best motors to pipe if you are looking for an outrageous horsepower gain. I don't know that much about that Cat.
Kick ass!

No doubt the Ultra is heavier, but put an experienced guy big enough to horse it around on it, and there won't be much of a contest...
Piped, it's the same sled as an XCR.

WHAAAAAAAAT!?!?!?!?! When an Ultra is piped it's like an XCR? PUT THE CRACKPIPE DOWN!!!!! I have seen some bad-ass Ultras out on the lakes and trails, but they are nothing like the XCR. With an Ultra piped, they are more like the 98 XCR 700.
As for the question about which one is faster, the Ultra or ZL 500, it's common sense! I know they aren't all like this, but every ZL 500 I have seen/raced/riden with is a dog. And yes, the Ultras were a dog stock, but if both are running right, both studded right, there is no way in hell a ZL 500 is going to take an Ultra.

ULTRA 680 OR ZL 500?

You guys have got to be kidding me. when you do a little work(just pipes and a GOOD clutch set) to an ultra you will run with 800s no problem. Don't you pay attention to hillclimbers, some of them still use ultra motors in their mod tube chassis machines!! Trust me on the Ultra thing, we have had 3 of them. One of them pulled a 151x2.25 and kept up with a 1999 800 XCR on a lake up 80 mph. One of the other ones we had(which was the fastest) ate 800s for lunch... not just a ski length or two but sled lengths. show me the ZL 500 that will do that.

Jester, I was not refering to an Ultra motor that has a big bore kit, pipes, 44mm carbs, shaved heads, or any other mods, just a Ultra motor with pipes. Yes, the pipes wake them up grumpy, but it's not like an XCR.

Maybe someone could take the time to tell me what the difference is between a 97 Ultra with pipes and a 98 700 XCR.
